The History Behind the Book
In October 2015, Crystal did a word sprint with some friends to practice writing daily in preparation for NaNoWriMo. The theme was “the moon.” Before she knew it, she had a wonderful story about a little boy who tries to figure out what the moon is made of. She thought it was cute, so she read it to her kids. They loved it! Her five-year-old requested it every night for almost a month.
Eventually, Crystal realized she needed pictures to go with the words. If her kids loved it so much, maybe other kids would, too. So she reached out to her friend Michael Finch. He had been doing cover art for the publishing company she was working for at the time, and was available to do her illustrations on the side. Within a few months, they had their pictures! There was just one thing left it needed.
The idea behind the story was to inspire children to use their imaginations and find creative new ways to explore the world around them. But Crystal wanted to do more than that. And fate gave her a way. The release date was more or less a coincidence; it was far enough out to finish formatting and proofing but early enough that it’d be in time for Christmas. When she realized the perfect date was November 17th, she almost cried. On that day in 2013, Crystal lost one of her closest friends to complications with diabetes. Even though the book itself has nothing to do with the illness, she wants to help children who are suffering from it, who have to deal with it every day. She wants to make sure that other families won’t have to lose their loved ones to diabetes.
That is why 10% of the profits from all sales of this book will be donated to the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation. Through buying the book, you change one child’s life with a story and another child’s life with a donation. And that just makes our hearts happy.
